The Aims and Objectives

Their Past Your Future is a UK-wide BIG Lottery funded initiative, started in 2005 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of VE Day. Its stated aims are:

  • Increased knowledge and understanding for young people / younger generations of the diversity of experience of the Second World War veterans, both military and civilian, and veterans of subsequent conflicts.
  • Increased knowledge and understanding for young people / younger generations of the impact and contemporary significance and resonance of the Second World War, and post-1945 conflict, for society today.
  • Increased and proactive engagement with and participation in, learning, community and / or civic activity to record, publish and make educational use of local, regional, national and international historical sources / archives.

Within the overall aims of Their Past Your Future, Remembering Scotland At War hopes to:

  • Reflect Scottish experience and contribution at local, regional and national level
  • Produce a legacy of online materials / resources for learning that will complement existing archives collections
  • Ensure the widest possible geographic and demographic spread of participation.

Remembering Scotland At War will facilitate the delivery of the UK scheme in Scotland and will enable museums and project partner organisations to pursue the following objectives:

  • More instances of contact and sustainable partnerships between young people and veterans to develop and promote the benefits and impact of inter-generational learning
  • More instances of contact and sustainable partnerships between young people (schools / community groups), local museums and galleries, and national organisations, allowing for greater access to collections
  • More learning resources for schools and young people, giving access to information about: the impact of the Second World War and post-1945 conflicts, and their aftermath; the social and political relations in Scotland (and Britain); Scottish (and British) identity; international law and international relations
  • An increase in digital resources, well linked to one another, giving wider access to information about: the impact of the Second World War and post-1945 conflicts, and their aftermath; the social and political relations in Scotland (and Britain); Scottish (and British) identity; international law and international relations.
