The aim of the Online Museum area is to allow future generations of local, national and international audiences to understand the true meaning of WWII and later conflicts for Scottish people.
It has been designed using Flash technology for the exploration of heritage resources and to learn about World War II and conflicts since.
We hope you are able to navigate around the site easily. However, below are some questions and answers for your information.
The online museum area doesn't seem to be working. What should I do?
You may need to install some software onto your computer to allow the Remembering Scotland At War online museum to work.
Much of the online museum area requires your computer to have the Adobe Flash Player. You can download the latest version, free, to your computer by going to the Adobe Flash Player website.
In order to play any video or sound content, your computer will require Apple QuickTime. You can download the latest version, free, to your computer by going to the Apple QuickTime website.
If you are viewing the website on a public or shared computer, the installation of new software may require to be done by the computer's 'Administrator'.
It looks like the edges of the website are cut off. How do I fix this?
To ensure you are viewing the website at its optimal size, on the Menu Toolbar, click on 'View' then 'Zoom' then '100%'
You may also want to view the online museum in Full Screen mode by pressing [F11] or by clicking on 'View' in the Menu Toolbar, then 'Full Screen'. To exit Full Screen mode, press [F11] or hover your mouse at the top of the screen and click to 'Restore' the window.
I've noticed a factual error in the Online Museum area. What can I do?
Much of the information in the Online Museum area is based on people's experiences and their recollections of those experiences. Whilst every effort has been made to fact-check the online exhibitions, we must emphasise that memories have been captured as they were relayed.
Please email any comments to the Project Manager by clicking on the 'Contact' tab in the Main Website. Please include as much information about where the factual error occurs, including the Project Team, Exhibition Title, Asset Number / Title and page address (url).
Alternatively, please comment on exhibitions and contribute recollections of similar experiences by posting in the Community area.
What material can I download and for what purposes?
All material in the Online Museum area is 'viewable' by anyone using the site. However, not all material may be downloaded.
The easiest way to see if an asset is downloadable is to try the 'Download' button. If you are unable to click on the 'Download' button (it is greyed out), the asset is not available for download. This is usually at the request of the person or organisation that has supplied the asset.
If you have a Glow log-in, you will find increased access to material that has been designated 'Downloadable for educational purposes only'. Glow is the new online network for Scottish schools, developed by Learning and Teaching Scotland. Teachers and pupils who are members of Glow may log in to the Remembering Scotland At War Main Website.
Moving images are not available to download as the files are too big.
If material is downloadable, then it may be used for the following purposes: research and private study (both must be non-commercial), criticism, review, and news reporting. For any other purpose, please contact the exhibition's creators for permission to use.
Please be respectful of any downloaded material, including the people and themes it may portray.
Why do I need to sign in to the Collect area?
The Collect area works like a shopping basket. You may explore the Online Museum area, collecting assets as you go.
For example, a teacher may prepare in advance for a lesson so that, when they are standing in front of a class, they simply go to their Collection of assets, rather than searching through the entire site for each item.
In order for the website to remember you (and your basket of assets), you need to provide some unique information (ie username, email and password). This information will never be used to send you promotional emails etc.
I still have a question!
If you have any queries about the Online Museum, post a message in the Community area's Forum. The Administrator or another Community member will be able to help you. Alternatively, contact the Remembering Scotland At War Project Manager via the Contact page in the Main Website.
